Senior POWTY - Youth engagement program for 8th - 12th grade students

Senior POWTY offers multiple entry points for teens to continue their personal Jewish journeys. Participants in all of our POWTY Youth Programs develop and embrace their identities as Jews through involvement in our vibrant Jewish youth community, where programs focus on nourishing and strengthening the three core elements of every human being, mind, soul, and community, and a lifelong connection to Judaism is created and enjoyed. Tikkun olam (healing the world) projects, Shabbat and holiday programs and celebrations, social events, cultural experiences, NFTY-NAR programs, trips and overnights are all offered to Senior POWTY members throughout the year.

POWTY Tuesdays!

For 8-12th grade POWTY Members

Our program meets weekly, on Tuesdays from 6-7:45 pm, and dinner is always included! Our four program topics, Studying, Rejoicing, Seeking Justice and Mentoring, offer our teen members a variety of ways to learn, grow and engage in the Jewish community. On Study evenings, 12th graders participate in Kabbalat Torah/Confirmation class, 10th and 11th graders participate in the POWTY Foundation, our Jewish teen philanthropy program, and 8th and 9th graders participate in the POWTY Tikkun Team, our community service learning program. Teens are also welcome to register as POWTY Madrichim and serve as student leaders in our religious school!

More About our Learning Programs, which meet once per month on POWTY Tuesdays!

POWTY Tikkun Team: 8th & 9th grade members of the Team will get the chance to learn about Judaism and their world through experience, will be challenged to take action, and will be inspired to puruse tzedek (justice) through our hands-on community service learning program!

POWTY Foundation: 10-11th grade POWTY members meet with Lindsay once per month to learn about Jewish values and perspectives on giving, philanthropy, and areas of need on Long Island. Together, the group identifies their shared values, beliefs, and mission for their Jewish philanthropy board by crafting a mission statement as a team, and together they review grant proposals from dozens of Long Island non-profit organizations and attend site visits for selected organizations before deciding where to grant their funds, which are both granted to and fundraised by the group. In the past four years, POWTY Foundation members have granted almost $10,000 to local nonprofit organizations!

Madrichim Program: 8-12th grade POWTY members are invited to be role models and have lots of laughs with our youngest students as madrichim! Our madrichim come each week to serve as teaching assistants in one of our Sunday classes.  It’s a great opportunity to develop a lasting relationship with the teacher you work with and get to know many great kids.  Meanwhile, you’ll develop teaching skills which might come in handy later in life.

Kabbalat Torah (Confirmation):  This year of study with Rabbi Z is the final learning opportunity for 12th grade POWTY members, which culminates with a special ceremony – and your picture up on the wall of the synagogue! 12th graders are invited to discuss, debate and study with Rabbi Z for a wonderful year of Jewish learning and growth.

POWTY has been busy...
