More About POWTY Tuesdays!

7-12th grade POWTY members meet weekly, on Tuesdays from 6-7:45 pm, and dinner is always included! Our POWTY programs that meet weekly offer our teen members a variety of ways to learn, grow and engage in the Jewish community.

7th and 8th graders participate in MPOW programming each week: MPOW offers members an innovative new curriculum that is grounded in Jewish values study and action sessions, which allow our adolescent learners to both study and experience Jewish values, and to find unique, creative, personal ways to express their meaning in their lives. Our program's calendar is interspersed with cultural, tikkun olam, and celebratory holiday events, and the program culminates in a curated gallery of personal Jewish values expression projects completed by our graduating 8th grade members to celebrate their growing & changing Jewish identities!

POWTY's 9-12th graders participate in programming together each week, with a varied calendar filled with exciting special guest speakers, holiday celebrations, cutlural study and immersion events, text study, and social events. Approximately every third week, POWTY's 9-12th graders share in Study Evenings with either their POWTY Foundation or Kabbalat Torah classes.

9th, 10th and 11th graders participate in the POWTY Foundation: members learn about Jewish values and perspectives on giving, philanthropy, and areas of need on Long Island. Together, the group identifies their shared values, beliefs, and mission for their Jewish philanthropy board by crafting a mission statement as a team, and together they review grant proposals from dozens of Long Island non-profit organizations and attend site visits for selected organizations before deciding where to grant their funds, which are both granted to and fundraised by the group. In the past four years, POWTY Foundation members have granted almost $15,000 to local nonprofit organizations!

12th graders participate in Kabbalat Torah (Confirmation):  This year of study with Rabbi Z is the final learning opportunity for 12th grade POWTY members, which culminates with a special ceremony – and your picture up on the wall of the synagogue! 12th graders are invited to discuss, debate and study with Rabbi Z for a wonderful year of Jewish learning and growth.

All 8-12th grade teens are invited:  Madrichim Program: members are invited to be role models and have lots of laughs with our youngest students as madrichim! Our madrichim come each week to serve as teaching assistants in one of our Sunday classes.  It’s a great opportunity to develop a lasting relationship with the teacher you work with and get to know many great kids.  Meanwhile, you’ll develop teaching skills which might come in handy later in life.
