“THE DUTY TO OBEY AND THE DUTY TO DISOBEY”
Although it is not included in the traditional Haggadah, one of the great stories in the Passover narrative-as told in exodus, chapter 1-is the story of the heroic midwives, Shifra
and Puah’s. Their actions-disobeying Pharaoh’s order to kill the Israelite baby boys-are the first recorded instance in history of civil disobedience. In this session we will look at the story of Shifra and Puah and other stories in the Torah, and discuss the question: WHEN SHOULD WE OBEY, AND WHEN ARE WE OBLIGATED TO DISOBEY, AN ORDER, LAW OR COMMAND.
